Key ideas
A visual story gives the viewer clues. Consider:
- Character: Who is involved?
- Goal: What does the character want?
- Setting: Where and when is this happening?
- Action: What is changing?
- Emotion: How should the moment feel?
- Cause and effect: What happened before, and what may happen next?
Pose, expression, camera angle, lighting, colour, and props can all tell part of the story.
Creative challenge
Create a three-image sequence:
- Before: establish the character and situation.
- Change: show an action, discovery, or problem.
- After: reveal the result or reaction.
Try to make the sequence understandable without words.
Reflect
- Can another person explain what happened?
- Which visual clue communicates the emotion best?
- What could you remove without losing the story?
