Key ideas
A gesture drawing captures the action, weight, and flow of a pose. Proportion describes the size relationship between parts.
Start with:
- The line of action
- The tilt of the shoulders and hips
- The direction of the head and limbs
- The body's centre of gravity
- Simple forms before details
Creative challenge
- Find five safe pose references.
- Draw each pose for 30–60 seconds.
- Begin with one line of action.
- Add simple forms for the head, rib cage, pelvis, and limbs.
- Choose one pose and redraw it with more careful proportions.
Reflect
- Does the pose feel balanced?
- Can you understand the action without details?
- Which proportion needs the most revision?
